Augustus comes to Hazel after the meeting and says that the tumor is in one eye. He invites Hazel to come to his home and watch the movie. The two speak about how they've dealt with their experienceswith breast cancer. Hazel discovers that she has thyroid cancer that has been able to spread to her lungs. Augustus has been diagnosed as having osteosarcoma, and has since been cancer-free. Augustus and Hazel agree to share their top novels before they bring Hazel home. Augustus presents Hazel the Price of Dawn and Hazel recommends An Imperial Fliction.
Hazel describes the splendor of An Inexplicable Affliction. It's a novel about Anna who is a young girl suffering from cancer. It's the only book she's read that's matched her experiences. She explains how the novel abruptly concludes in the middle of the sentence leaving readers without closureas to the fate of the characters. She speculates on Peter van Houten's mystery author of the novel, and she believes fled Amsterdam immediately after publication. He hasn't heard from since.
Augustus magically informs Hazel that he found Van Houten's assistant Lidewij and was capable of establishing an email conversation with her. Hazel is able to share the letter of Van Houten with the other, and they come up with the list of questions to ask Van Houten questions. The idea is to help clarify the novel's confusing conclusion. Hazel is most concerned regarding Anna's destiny. She is convinced that Anna's mother will survive her daughter's passing and her parents will be okay after Hazel's death. Van Houten eventually replies that he's only able answer Hazel's questions in person. He invites her to come visit him when she's in Amsterdam.
Augustus Invites Hazel to a picnic shortly after. He turns out to have planned a Dutch-themed picnic. He informs him that Van Houten is a charity which grants wishes to children with cancer and has offered to grant his wish. He touches her face , and she is thrilled. She knows she is in love with him, but she is sure she will cause him harm when she passes away. She likens herself to a weapon.
Hazel experiences the ailment of a serious episodeof liquid buildup in her lungs and is taken to an ICU. After a few days, Hazel is released and discovers that Augustus is not leaving the waiting room of the hospital. Hazel gets a second note from van Houten. The second letter is more personal and cryptic. Hazel is now more determined to travel to Amsterdam than she has ever been after reading the letter. But there is a problem: Hazel's parents and team of doctors aren't convinced she is strong enough to travel. The situation appears unsolvable when Hazel's doctor Dr. Maria, one of her most experienced doctors, persuades Hazel that she should travel to an opportunity to live her dreams.
Augustus, Hazel and Hazel's mother are planning to go to Amsterdam. But when Hazel as well as Augustus encounter Van Houten for the first time, they realize that he is not a renowned genius, but an angry drunk who is unable to answer Hazel's questions. They leave Van Houten's in total disappointment, and are accompanied by Lidewij, who's shocked at the conduct of Van Houten. Augustus and Hazel have a romantic kiss at the conclusion of their tour , to the cheers of the spectators. They go back to their hotel where they are reunited for the first time. Augustus admits to Hazel that he was scanned by an body scan while inside the ICU. This revealed that his cancer had returned and spread throughout. Hazel realizes it is Augustus has been a grenade as she returns to Indianapolis. The condition worsensand He loses his charm and confidence. While he gets more vulnerable and fearful yet he's a handsome boy to Hazel. This is when she stops calling him Augustus and instead refers to him as Gus as his parents. Hazel recognizes how much she still cherishes him. Augustus's condition deteriorates quickly. Augustus organizes a prefuneral and Isaac and Hazel deliver tributes. Hazel draws inspiration from Van Huyten regarding bigger and smaller infinity. She shares with Augustus how much she cherishes him and that she wouldn't ever trade the time they spent together for anything.
Augustus dies eight days later. Hazel is shocked to meet Van Houten in her funeral. Van Houten said that Gus and he had a long-standing correspondence and that Augustus demanded that Van Houten make amends for the journey from Amsterdam. Van Houten also said that Hazel must attend the funeral of his father. Van Houten discusses Anna's fate abstractly, however Hazel does not care. Hazel is informed by Isaac within a couple of days that Augustus had written something to her. When Hazel tries to find the documents, Van Houten appears again. He is drunk and reveals that Anna was the name of his daughter. At the age of eight old, she died of cancer. The Imperial Abilities was his literary attempt to reconcile with her death. Van Houten is instructed by Hazel to drink and write another book.
Hazel is later informed that Augustus had delivered the pages directly to Van Houten, as he had asked Van Houten to write a thoughtful eulogy about Hazel. Lidewij has Van Houten go through the pages, before transferring them to Hazel. Hazel is able to finish the novel by reading the words of Augustus. He explained that, while it's natural to be wounded in this world, we also have the option of choosing to allow others to take care of it. And he was happy with his decision. He hopes that Hazel will be pleased with her choice. Hazel claims that she loves the conclusion of the novel.
